A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Wurtele Thrust Stage

Summary
As Duke Theseus prepares to wed Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, a hilarious amateur theater troupe of mechanicals rehearses a play in their honor. Meanwhile, four young lovers - Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius - escape their parents' grasp and flee to the nocturnal realm of a forest led by fairy king and queen Oberon and Titania. In the forest, a mischievous Puck and other mystical spirits stage a few magical moments of their own, sweeping the mechanicals into the naughtiness, and soon the lovers are caught in a web of love's joys and difficulties. But as the break of day approaches, these misadventures come to a felicitous close and everyone celebrates a very happy ending to a miraculous night.
More than a decade since its critically acclaimed run, Joe Dowling's landmark production of Shakespeare's beloved comedy, complete with original music and flying fairies, makes a triumphant debut in the Guthrie's new home. Weaving three stories of love, magic and perception in a moonlit forest on a midsummer night, Shakespeare's fantastical play is an audience favorite.
